Just a well done to the cast (and band!) of Brassed Off. There were some really strong performances, the music was great, the comedy was genuinely funny, and the entire cast almost word perfect (which is more than can be said for most opening nights of plays I've seen in the West End). I have to confess to finding the script itself not as good as the original screenplay, but I think that just highlighted, once again, the quality of the performances on stage.

The comments from the audience as I came out were unanimously positive - everyone I heard talking loved it - so well done all involved!

Hi, my name's John and I stumbled upon this forum after visiting the website, having been to the royalty for the first time last night (Cooking with Elvis, great stuff), despite having lived in Sunderland for a total of about seven years. Despicable, isn't it?

I'm increasingly becoming a more regular theatregoer, mostly since I became an am-dram type a year and a bit ago, with the Washington Theatre Group, which has introduced me to the wonders of Spitfire impersonation and being a pantomime dame. At the moment, we're rehearsing Pygmalion, in which I'm play Colonel Pickering.

I also did a bit of am-dram as a teen, when one of the roles I performed most was a wheelchair-bound kid in a north-east based play called Operation Elvis. Bit of an odd coincidence given the play I saw last night.

Well-deserved praise to the cast of Cooking With Elvis. Superb performances all round and all the more impressive for it being a first night. I think extra tribute needs to be paid to the cast for coping with an audience that often drowned out the words of the play, especially Corinne who must have thought she was at a football match thirty seconds into the second act. I don't think I've ever seen (or, rather, heard) an audience enjoy a play so much at the Royalty. Personally, I confess to finding Mr Hall's script a bit weak, so it's another tribute to the acting and direction (and singing!) when I say I'd still happily recommend people to see it because of the strength of the performance.

Well done all! Ten points to Gryffindor!

By the way, is it just a coincidence that you have an actor called Lee Stewart appearing in a play by someone called Lee, playing someone called Stuart?

[/color]
The next Royalty Ramble has been set for Sunday 13th April meeting at Sunderland Bridge, near Croxdale at 10.15am for a 10.30am start.

This will be an 8 mile circular walk around Shincliffe Woods and the surrounding area, with one moderate climb near the beginning and another near the end. Bring a packed lunch, or if you prefer there is a garden centre along the route which has a tea shop attached.

As always, bring a good pair of walking shoes and some warm / waterproof clothing in case the weather is grim.

For directions or for more information contact David Farn on 0191 385 3247 or 0775 2600290.

Come and join the Royalty Ramblers for some fresh air, exercise and a good natter along the way![/u][/u]
